Fire Truck Leasing
For most cities, fire apparatus is their larget equipment expense. Although it may last 5, 10, 15, or more years, if you’re writing a check upfront (in advance), it can be a real “budget breaker.” Municipal fire departments, volunteer fire departments, fire districts, and districts are all facing variations of the same problem. “We just can’t choke down the cost of 10-20 year assets like fire apparatus, in one budget year…” Most fire chiefs and administrators have probably heard that a few too many times.
Why Waiting Isn’t Always Your Best Option
Sometimes there’s an urge to “sit on the decision” for now. But the economics may be working against your department on this one:
1. Interest rates are lower than they’ve been for years. Lock them in now (and there is widespread agreement on this), or you will be paying more very shortly. “Use them or lose them!”
2. Inflation is raising the cost of new equipment (particularly fire apparatus) at a faster pace than anything you’re likely to earn banking your funds for the future. Saving could result in a net loss of your department’s “purchasing power.”
“Plan B” Pay As You Go!
Why pay in advance for essential fire trucks, apparatus, and equipment that your department will be using for years when you can “pay as you go?” Firetruck leasing (municipal leasing) is pay-as-you-go, LOW-INTEREST lease-to-own financing that can bridge the gap by spreading payments out over 5, 10, or 15 budget years. Municipal & Volunteer Fire Departments
Who’s eligible for what? There are two primary “types” of fire departments for municipal leasing purposes. The FIRST TYPE is “municipal fire departments” (funded with taxes) Full, part-time,
Can VFD’s Use Low-Interest Municipal Leasing?
Volunteer Fire Departments (non-profits) are eligible for municipal leasing rates, but only for new or used Fire Trucks (vehicles that “put out fires”) and for Fire Stations / Fire Houses (new, renovated or expanded). Nothing else. A VFD has to meet certain IRS criteria to qualify for tax-exempt municipal leasing (the very lowest interest rates). All of the VFD’s other acquisitions are treated as non-qualifying and priced at taxable (non-tax-exempt) rates, which are slightly higher. See the taxable tab below.
